VHB is pleased to welcome John Hapkiewicz, PE, as Director of Transportation - Connecticut. John brings nearly 30 years of experience managing and overseeing high-profile transportation projects, making him a valuable asset to our team. In this role, John will lead a dedicated team focusing on transportation agencies, including transit and rail, structures, highway, and traffic. His appointment marks a significant step towards strengthening our relationships with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and enhancing our visibility as a full-service engineering firm throughout the state.
John's extensive background includes managing complex transportation projects throughout New England, including prior Connecticut-based projects such as:
- Track Improvement Mobility Enhancement (TIME) Project No. 1, part of the governor’s initiative to increase the current Maximum Authorized Speed (MAS) from 70 mph to 90 mph through a three-mile section of track from Bridgeport to Stratford, CT
- Replacement of the Metro-North Railroad Devon Bridge, a movable bridge that crosses the Housatonic River between Milford and Stratford, CT
- Engineering Services for Reconstruction of I-84/Route 8 Interchange in Waterbury, CT
In his new role, John will build and oversee a team dedicated to sustaining and growing VHB’s presence in the Connecticut transportation sector. He will be pivotal in showcasing VHB’s design-build experience, safety focus, and track record in advancing net-zero mobility programs and efforts to decarbonize transportation. Under John’s leadership, VHB will be at the forefront of aiding Connecticut in achieving its strategic transportation goals.

John holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and Texas.
